Effortless Flow: Living in Alignment with Your Natural State

Writer's picture: Graeme WaterfieldGraeme Waterfield

This was us on our way to our Couples retreat in Switzerland last year.

It feels rare that we get away, or even take a break these days, but one of the beautiful things about travel is that it’s easier to get into a flow state.

Many people who’ve been travelling, come back and experience what’s commonly called the travellers blues, where this flow state seems to be overtaken by the stresses and heaviness of every day life.

But with practice, I believe that our life can become effortless, carrying you as smoothly as a stream flows toward the ocean, even if that stream sometimes passes through rapids.

Some athletes report momentarily entering what they describe as this ‘flow state’..

they describe it as:

• Deep focus – Fully engaged in the present moment

• Effortless action – Movement and decisions feel natural

• Loss of time awareness – Minutes or hours pass without noticing

• Clarity and confidence – A sense of control without overthinking

• Intrinsic motivation – The activity itself is rewarding

Thousands of years ago, this state was named Wu Wei in China. Christ described it as acting in alignment with divine consciousness.

Yet, for many of us, reaching this place takes time, as our conditioned, unconscious compulsions, and the programming of the artificial self, often resist the natural flow of peace, unity, and presence.

One of my favorite daily practices is to go for a walk and let the pace happen naturally, allowing my body to move however it wants, without force or control.

The men I work with, often start to experience this flow state through the healing work of the conscious energy practices we do.

To enter this flow, it takes time to heal the neurosis and fear that we all carry to some greater or less extent within our nervous system.

But as we do, we find the joy in simply letting go, into a flow of grace and beauty that was there all along.
